With the increasing focus on global warming and potential future oil shortages, people are starting to think more about renewable energy sources. This is important, because there are many ideas that with the proper impetus behind them, could go a long ways towards alleviating both the environmental and social problems related to power. But only a tiny percentage of these ideas are actually in use or being implemented.
Almost everyone purchases their electricity from the electric company. In some areas there is a choice of companies, and in others there is only one. Regardless, people are limited to the offerings that their company provides, and non-renewable sources are usually cheaper. If your company does provide an option to request that part of your electricity come from sustainable sources, you should opt in.
Creating personal sustainable sources is one of the ways that people get around the electric company’s offerings. Solar panels are popular in many parts of the world, but they are too expensive for a lot of people. The sun is a never-ending source of power, however, and solar panels are effective in most places on the globe.
A few programs exist to make solar panels more affordable. These are usually in the form of government grants, tax breaks, and a few green organization programs. One way to make up a small amount of the cost is that some electric companies will let you remain hooked to their power grid, and not only take electricity when necessary, but also feed it back. If you produce more than you use, you get paid.
Another option is personal wind turbines. Although these can be noisy and require a fair amount of space, anyone who owns at least an acre should consider one. Less universally useful than solar panels because some areas are not windy enough to make them worthwhile, these devices can still produce a fair amount of electricity under the right circumstances.
There are many possible sources of renewable energy that could be being exploited and are not. There are also many sources that are only being used to a fraction of their capacity. Options exist like the ability to farm algae which produces oils to make bio-diesel from, but they are not being put into action. Geothermal heating, which requires running a pipe into the earth to warm a home with naturally-produced heat, is very rare.
The supply of renewable energy is all about the demand. People need to stand up and make clear with their voices and their actions that they want more options. Those who can afford solar panels or wind turbines should seriously consider getting them, and those who can’t, should always vote for green initiatives.
Because supply and demand is the basic model behind every business, people need to help create more demand for renewable energy. Electricity, fuel, and other power sources are produced by businesses looking for a profit, and along with government initiatives, the most important thing people can do is buy more. Increased production lowers costs, and then more people can afford the product, hopefully leading to an ever-increasing amount of green alternative power options.
